{"id":595,"date":"2020-03-25T08:50:33","date_gmt":"2020-03-25T08:50:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/melbyspost.co.za\/?p=595"},"modified":"2020-11-15T09:44:34","modified_gmt":"2020-11-15T09:44:34","slug":"chakalaka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/melbyspost.co.za\/index.php\/2020\/03\/25\/chakalaka\/","title":{"rendered":"Chakalaka"},"content":{"rendered":"<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em><b>Chakalaka<\/b>\u00a0is a\u00a0South African vegetable\u00a0relish, usually spicy, that is <\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>traditionally served with bread,\u00a0pap,\u00a0samp,\u00a0stews, or\u00a0curries.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>~ Wikipedia ~<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>I&#8217;ve never really been a fan<\/h4>\n<p>Years ago when Chakalaka became available in supermarkets, I liked the taste of it, but I always thought it lacked something. Reading the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chakalaka\">Wikipedia<\/a> entry above, I am relieved that chakalaka <em>is<\/em> commercially available. How else would I even have known about its existence? But only after I tried making it myself, did I realise what it was that the tinned versions lacked: home-made goodness.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>The second time was the charm<\/h4>\n<p>I am an avid watcher of TV cooking shows. I actually came across the recipe for home-made Chakalaka years ago while watching an episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/sibamtongana.com\/\">Siba Mtongana<\/a>&#8216;s <em>Siba&#8217;s Table.\u00a0<\/em>Her recipe was extremely easy, healthy and looked very delicious. I still didn&#8217;t try it though, as it was not really my relish of choice, having grown up with <a href=\"https:\/\/melbyspost.co.za\/index.php\/2020\/02\/17\/traditional-tomato-sauce-for-pap-wors\/\">Traditional Tomato Sauce<\/a>. Moving on a couple of years, I was watching a new Siba&#8217;s Table series and again she mentioned her mother&#8217;s Chakalaka recipe. Now I had to try it. And I am very happy that I did. Home-made Chakalaka is my new favourite relish! It&#8217;s so good that I keep wanting to go back for another spoonful!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4>What&#8217;s not to like?<\/h4>\n<p>Siba&#8217;s Chakalaka recipe produces a pretty dish full of fresh veggies and nutritious beans. But it is also filled with flavour. The normal flavours in Chakalaka comes from chilli and\/or curry, but Siba also adds garlic and ginger. Not very traditional, but it really elevates this dish to something exciting to serve with a braai or a stew. It is very versatile as well. It is delicious hot, but I also love it cold served like salsa. You definitely don&#8217;t know what you&#8217;re missing until you try it!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-607 \"
